Our Philosophy

Regreso
al origen.

We didn't build Atabey to follow the category. We built it to return to what worked before it — ingredients chosen because they have centuries of use behind them, not because they photograph well.

The beginning

One question.

"What would a personal care brand look like if it were built around the ingredient traditions of Latin America and East Asia — not as inspiration, but as foundation?"

That was the question we started with. The answer became Atabey.

Most brands use botanicals as decoration — a word on the label, a hint of color in the formula. We went the other direction. Every ingredient in the collection was chosen because it has a documented history of use, a biological mechanism that earns its place, and enough supply chain transparency that we know where it came from.

The name Atabey comes from the Taíno goddess of water and fertility — the first being, the source. That's what the formulas are about: going back to the source, not forward into the next trend.

Two traditions

Where the ingredients come from.

The collection draws from two ingredient traditions with deep roots and documented efficacy — Latin American botanical medicine and traditional Chinese medicine. Not because they're exotic. Because they work.

Latin America

  • Yerba mate Andean highlands. Antioxidant-dense, stimulates the scalp, used for centuries in hair care across the Southern Cone.
  • Andiroba Amazon basin. Anti-inflammatory, deeply moisturizing oil pressed from the seeds of the Carapa tree.
  • Copaíba Amazonian resin. Antimicrobial and soothing — traditional wound care, now used for barrier protection in rinse-off formulas.
  • Passionfruit seed Tropical Americas. High in linoleic acid, lightweight enough to absorb without residue.
  • Cupuaçu butter Amazonian superfruit. Deep conditioning, high water absorption capacity, strengthens the hair cortex.

East Asian Traditions

  • Camellia oil Japanese ōbako tradition. Oleic-acid-rich oil used for centuries by geishas for hair and skin. Non-comedogenic, penetrating.
  • Yuzu East Asian citrus. High in vitamin C and limonene. Brightening, aromatic, naturally fragrant — no synthetic substitutes needed.
  • Ginger root Traditional Chinese medicine staple. Improves scalp circulation, strengthens follicles, historically prescribed for hair loss.
  • Rice protein East and Southeast Asia. Hydrolyzed to penetrate the hair shaft, repairs damage, adds shine without weight.
  • Sea buckthorn Himalayan coasts and Central Asia. Dense in omegas 3, 6, 7, and 9 — regenerative and antioxidant.
Formulation

Clean by design.

We believe the ingredients that aren't there matter as much as the ones that are. Every formula was built around a short list of things we would not include — not because of trends, but because the evidence for their harm is solid enough that we didn't need to take the risk.

  • No sulfates
  • No parabens
  • No phthalates
  • No silicones
  • No synthetic fragrance
  • No mineral oil
  • No artificial dyes
  • Vegan · Cruelty-free
Sustainability

Refillable by design.

The single-use plastic bathroom bottle is a solved problem — the industry just hasn't chosen to solve it. We chose to solve it from the start. Every Atabey formula is designed to be refilled, not thrown away.

This isn't a premium add-on or a sustainability upsell. It's how the product is meant to work. The dispensers are permanent. The formulas are concentrated. The refills ship in reduced-waste formats.

Production

Made in Honduras.

Our formulas are manufactured in Honduras by a team that has been producing personal care products for over two decades. Proximity to raw material sourcing, consistent standards, and a supply chain we can audit — these aren't marketing points. They're operational decisions that affect what ends up in the bottle.

We source botanicals as close to origin as possible. We know the names of our suppliers. We visit.

The collection is the proof.

Four formulas. Two traditions. One commitment to ingredients that have earned their place.
